In the book of Ephesians, Paul writes a powerful letter to the faithful followers of Jesus Christ—those who were once outsiders or foreigners to God’s covenant and promises—who were in Ephesus. Paul explains that God’s purpose for the believer is to receive every spiritual blessing through Christ because we are united with Him. Ephesians 1:8 speaks about the abundance of wisdom and prudence God has given to the believer. Throughout the book, Paul’s goal is to shape, guide, and equip us in Christ.
Paul addresses three important subjects in Ephesians.
First, he teaches about God’s plan for us to be made new (Ephesians 2:9–10). We are God’s masterpiece in Christ. Through Christ, we are made new, and God uses various means to shape and mold us into who He wants us to be. The Lord desires that we grow in our walk of love (Ephesians 5:2). Paul urges the church in Ephesus to walk in love, to cultivate Christ-centered marriages (Ephesians 5:28–32), and to build families that reflect Christ and the Church. He also calls believers to walk in wisdom. All these matters help form us into the image of Christ—practices designed to shape us to look more like Jesus.
Second, Paul discusses God’s plan to develop and establish our purpose in Christ. This is accomplished through the fivefold ministry gifts Christ gave to the church (Ephesians 4:11). It is important to understand that God uses the fivefold ministry to help lead, train, and build up believers. These gifts strengthen the body of Christ and prepare God’s people for the work of ministry, enabling them to grow into their God-given purpose.
Third, Paul highlights God’s plan to equip us in Christ. He teaches on the whole armor of God, which is designed to equip, protect, and defend the body of Christ (Ephesians 6:10–19). This armor is vital for the church to stand against the enemy’s schemes. God equips us so that we are ready for whatever may come our way. Therefore, we take up the Word of God, salvation, faith, truth, the gospel of peace, and righteousness so we can stand firm against spiritual forces.
Remember that God has a plan, and it is already written and established for your good. He desires to make you, lead you, and equip you in Christ. No matter what comes your way, know that God has already purposed for you to walk in victory through Christ Jesus.
Ephesians 1:4 KJV
[4] according as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:
